I've had this small wooden crate for ages that I purchased at a dollar store. I loved the fact that it was wooden and small, but with the open slats, it wasn't really working for me. Things that I tried to store in it were either getting stuck or 'falling in the cracks'.
I needed to solve the problem and make this crate useful. The first thing to do was to add new slats on the long sides since the short sides were solid. Thank you as always, Stephen.
I then applied a lime green acrylic paint all over it.
I needed to fill in the bottom, but I didn't want to add more slats. Thinking about this for a couple of days, I came up with an idea. Why not use fabric? 🤪 All I needed to do was take a few measurements and then cut out a piece from some dyed muslin I had in my stash pile.
Then I added a zig zag stich to the long side raw edges.
Next, I slipped the fabric in between the slats and used glue on the top raw edges in order to adhere it to the crate. I used my little cheap clips to hold the fabric in place until it dried.
This is how the bottom looked on the inside, the outside, and the two (2) long sides.
I still had the two (2) solid ends to embellish, so I just did a simple decoupage with the bright, colorful multi-colored paper napkins I have been using lately.
So, with a few modifications and some inexpensive embellishing, I now have a fun little crate that is not only useful, but it only cost me a buck. Bonus! 😁
I’ll be back next Wednesday to show you what I’ve been working on. Hope you’ll stop by again for a visit.
