Crazy, Sexy Flapper Cigar Box

Writer: anupcycledartistanupcycledartist

This is the third of four cigar boxes I've decorated, and while I've enjoyed the creativity, I think it will be time to give it up after the next one. It's not really my thing, as I find more joy in upcycling other items. With that in mind, I decided to go all out on this one by mixing a traditional top with a beaded, sexy flair - two things that aren't typically combined. If you missed my other cigar box blogs, you can click on the buttons below.

As usual, I began by coating the exterior of the box with gesso.

Here's the bottom of the box. I leave it as is.

Here's the inside.

I painted the box a light, but vivid mint color.

Since I always begin with the top, I glued on a piece of lavender mulberry paper first. It's so delicate - I LOVE it! Then, I added a matte sealer before proceeding with additional embellishments.

On top of the mulberry paper, I placed a section of my homemade fabric paper (click the button below to see how I create it), a piece of my homemade paper (I'll write a blog about this soon), and a piece of gold-colored Momigami paper.

After that, I applied a high gloss sealer to all the papers and affixed a stick-on skeleton key and keyhole, which I had purchased in a package with other stick-ons found in my craft drawer. Additionally, I included three (3) acrylic purple gems. Do you notice how the high gloss sealer enhanced and clarified the fabric paper? It's very subtle, but noticeable.

Now for my sexy and fun addition of a beaded trim that I glued on all around the box.

Next, I cut a piece of white mulberry paper and adhered that to the bottom interior of the box. After it dried, I added a piece of multicolored parachute cord and glued it around the perimeter for a splash of fun color.

And here you go. It's one crazy, sexy thang!

This Week’s Tea Spilling

Last night, I viewed a new, poignant documentary on Netflix called 'Buy Now'. I strongly suggest watching it. It will enlighten you and ideally encourage a greater appreciation for upcycling instead of buying unnecessary merch.

The part of the film about 'recycling' is truly startling and worth remembering.

I would like to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving/Friendsgiving tomorrow. We are already in the process of making our side dishes and casseroles. Every year, we have been adding vegan versions of traditional casseroles we love and so far, so good, but this year - 100% vegan. We are hoping that all will come out well, but even if it doesn't, does it really matter? The food is not the most important thing when it comes down to it.

I’ll be back next Wednesday to show you what I’ve been working on. Hope you’ll stop by again for a visit.

Thank you for your comment, Peg. I didn't think of it that way, but now that you mention it. Yes, a little surprise. 😉
