An Upcycled Space

Writer's picture: anupcycledartistanupcycledartist

I have this peculiar small corner that was essentially useless because of its size. It was briefly occupied by a curio cabinet, one of the only things that would actually fit in the space.

However, as an aspiring minimalist, I had to bid adieu to the fancy curio cabinet and most of its stuff. Turns out, even us minimalists need a little somethin'-somethin'.

For some time, the nook remained vacant. Then one day I came up with a plan to transform it into a practical space. I decided to convert it into my own little sewing area. Luckily, there was a desk from a 3-piece set stored in the garage, so Stephen brought it up for me and the nook was on its' way to becoming functional. The next thing needed was shelves. Oh Stephen!!! 😁

While I was thrilled about having a new area exclusively for my sewing, the sight of the desk alone triggered anxiety as it was not the right size for the space.

And then, once upon a time in a land of office supplies, the quest for the Goldilocks of desks began. Not too big, not too small, but just right - a desk fit for a cozy, functional nook.

It took approximately eight (8) months to find that special desk, but alas, I did, and it just needed a little makeover to be totally perfect. The best part? It only cost $40.00!

It even had a drawer! 😍

It was a perfect fit!

Now for the fun part - the transformation! The first thing was to remove the back piece which was probably used to store mail, envelopes, bills, etc. It was unneeded for my purpose, so off it went into the garage until I come up with an idea to upcycle it. Then, I decided to paint the desk, and I chose a deep turquoise color for the top and black for the legs.

Although I wasn't fond of the original wooden knob on the drawer, I considered painting it in a funky color and style. However, I came across this amazing glass knob that instantly caught my eye. It brought back memories of a doorknob from my childhood home. I also felt that it added a touch of unique elegance in its own way.

And then to the drawer. I love this drawer! I use it to store my sewing scissors, rotary cutter, pin cushions, and the threads I use the most. The spools are kept together via wooden craft sticks currently, but eventually I would like to expand upon this conceptual plan and fashion something a little more 'finished'. For now, it will do.

And here is my completed cozy, little, upcycled space with my upcycled desk that isn't too big, isn't too small, but just right for me. I challenge Goldilocks to find a more perfect fit. 🤪

This Week’s Tea Spilling

If you received two (2) emails last week it was due to a glitch with the Wix hosting. Because I didn't receive my copy of the email, I thought that perhaps I either didn't click the 'publish' button, or I did, and it just didn't take. Well, neither of my assumptions were correct. The first email went to my SPAM box!!! 😒 I didn't realize it until I sent the second email out. If you did not receive either of the emails, please check your spam or junk files. If you find one or both, be sure to MOVE at least one of them into your inbox. Thank you.

I’ll be back next Wednesday to show you what I’ve been working on. Hope you’ll stop by again for a visit.
